In-form Harry Kane eyeing Lewandowski’s single-season goal record

Bayern Munich and England striker Harry Kane believes he has a genuine chance of eclipsing Robert Lewandowski’s long-standing single-season Bundesliga goal record after a flying start to the current campaign.

Lewandowski set the benchmark with 41 goals in just 29 appearances for Bayern Munich in the 20/21 season, surpassing Gerd Muller’s 40-goal haul from 1971/72.

Kane, however, is already making a strong case, having scored 18 times in 14 outings so far. He has been central to Bayern’s dominance under Vincent Kompany, with the Bavarians sitting nine points clear at the top of the table after recording 12 wins and two draws.

While Lewandowski overperformed his expected goals (xG) by 8.7 during his record-breaking season, Kane has also been clinical, outperforming his xG by 6.1 after generating 11.9.

Lewandowski posted higher per-90 numbers for xG, big chances and shots, but Kane has been more accurate, registering slightly more shots on target per 90 minutes.

With Kane averaging 1.49 goals per game, just shy of Lewandowski’s 1.5, the prolific striker feels that, fitness permitting, he has every chance of rewriting Bundesliga history.

“I think that’s possible, especially with the start I’ve had so far this year. There is still a long way to go,” Kane told Sky Sports DE when asked about the single-season record.

“I need to be able to maintain this level for another four or five months. In football, the hardest thing is to be consistent over a long period of time.

“This record is an incredible record, and it will be hard to beat, I know that. I always think it’s great to try to have these ambitions.”

Kane will be looking to edge even closer to this record when Bayern visit Heidenheim for their final game of 2025 on Sunday.
