Enzo Maresca has left his role at Chelsea by mutual consent after just 18 months in charge of the London club.
Enzo Maresca, 45, took charge of the Blues in 2024 after leaving Leicester City and has now become the first manager in English Premier League history to leave his post on New Year’s Day.
The Italian guided the club to success in the UEFA Conference League last season, while they also won the inaugural edition of the new FIFA Club World Cup in the summer.
The 45-year-old final match in charge of the club was the 2-2 draw against Bournemouth last Tuesday, although he was absent at the post match press conference, leading to doubts over his future.
“Chelsea Football Club and head coach Enzo Maresca have parted company.
“During his time at the club, Enzo led the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. Those achievements will remain an important part of the club’s recent history, and we thank him for his contributions to the club”, Chelsea revealed in a statement.
Enzo Maresca has the highest win rate of any permanent manager since Todd Boehly took over with a 61.6% win rate across 90 matches.
However, results have steadily declined in recent weeks as Chelsea have won only three of their last 10 matches across all competitions.
“With key objectives still to play for across four competitions including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track.
“We wish Enzo well for the future.”
Chelsea face Manchester City, who Maresca was linked in during the season, in their first match of the new year on Sunday.
The Blues are expected to appoint a new manager in a matter of days, with Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior a leading candidate to take over the role.
