Man United part ways with Ruben Amorim

Manchester United have sacked manager Ruben Amorim after only 14 months in charge of the club, in a decision taken by the club hierarchy on Monday.

The Portuguese joined the club in November 2024, replacing Dutch manager Erik Ten Hag and now leaves despite having about 18 months left on his contract.

The former Sporting Lisbon manager hat criticized the board following Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Leeds United, hinting at external interference.

In a statement released, the Red Devils confirmed the departure of the 40-year-old on Monday morning.

“Ruben Amorim has departed his role as head coach of Manchester United.

Ruben was appointed in November, 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May”, the statement revealed

“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.

The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.”

Manchester United finished 15th in the English Premier League last season, but were sixth on the standings as at the time of Amorim’s dismissal.

However, they had won only one of their last three matches and dropped points against Wolves and Leeds United in their last two.

The Red Devils also reached the final of the UEFA Europa League last season, before losing to Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 in the final.

“Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”

Man United visit Turf Moor on Wednesday in their first league match after the news, with Darren Fletcher set to be at the dugout.

The club’s hierarchy will commence the search for a new permanent manager in the coming days, with the likes of Gareth Southgate, Oliver Glasner and Xavi Hernandez already linked to the role.
