Wayne Rooney backs Michael Carrick appointment at Man United

Wayne Rooney feels Manchester United were right to appoint Michael Carrick as caretaker manager to stabilize the team for the remainder of the season.

The Red Devils confirmed that Carrick, 44, returned to the club earlier this week to take charge of the first team until the end of the season.

The club had parted ways with Ruben Amorim earlier in the month following a series of poor performances and breakdown in relationship with the club’s hierarchy.

Carrick had previously managed three games in 2021, winning two and recording one draw, although his first game back at the dugout is a tough clash against city rivals Manchester City on Saturday.

“It is probably the obvious choice really because I don’t think there are any top, top managers available at the minute”, Rooney revealed.

“I think it is the right choice at this moment in time. It is a difficult task of course. Where Manchester United are at the minute is not a good place and Michael has to go in and steady the ship.”

Rooney, who enjoyed a successful spell at Manchester United alongside Carrick as a player, had previously expressed willingness to rejoin the club as part of the coaching staff.

The former Birmingham City boss also revealed his stance on the potential permanent manager for the Red Devils in the summer.

“Alonso did incredible at Leverkusen and I think you have more chance of him sitting and waiting and hoping with [Liverpool manager Arne] Slot,” Rooney added.

“Tuchel is the one for me. He knows the Premier League, has won trophies. He is doing well at England. Time will tell.”

Manchester United and Manchester City clash in the EPL match of the round tomorrow, with Carrick eyeing a victory in his first match back at the club.
