Barcelona suffer injury blow with Pedri to spend time on sidelines

Barcelona have confirmed that midfielder Pedri Gonzalez will miss up to one month of action with a hamstring injury suffered in Wednesday’s Champions League win over Slavia Prague.

The Spaniard was forced off with injury around the half hour mark of the clash, as the Catalan giants came back from a goal down to win 4-2 and move up to ninth in the 36-team standings.

After undergoing further tests, the timeline for his recovery has now been determined, in a major blow to Barca.

Tests taken this morning have confirmed that first team player Pedri has a muscular injury in his right hamstring,” said Barca in a statement.

“The recovery time will be one month.”

Pedri also missed several weeks of action earlier in the season, before returning to action in late November.

The 23-year-old will miss Barcelona’s crucial clash against Copenhagen next Wednesday in their final league phase match of this season’s Champions League.

The La Liga champions must beat their Danish counterparts to stand a chance of making it into the top eight and booking an automatic ticket into the Round of 16.

They are currently ninth on the standings, although it is certain that one of those above them will drop points in the final round of matches.

Pedri will also miss league matches against Real Oviedo, Elche, Girona and Mallorca in his time on the sidelines and will also be unavailable for the Copa del Rey quarterfinal clash against Albacete.

Barcelona welcome Real Oviedo to Camp Nou on Sunday, hoping to bounce back from a 2-1 defeat to Real Sociedad in their last match.

Their lead at the top has also been reduced to one point by rivals Real Madrid, setting up another fierce title challenge.
