Chelsea captain Reece James says Cole Palmer remains committed to his long-term future at the club, despite transfer speculations of an exit this month.
The former Manchester City forward has been subject of intense speculations over the course of the month, with reports emerging that he was unhappy at the club.
Palmer has struggled with a groin injury this season which has limited his impact, while reports also suggested he favoured a return to Manchester to join boyhood club Manchester United.
While speaking after the crucial win over Napoli on Wednesday night which sealed Chelsea’s spot in the Round of 16, James debunked news of an exit for the 23-year-old.
“He’s been in a difficult period, he’s had a few setbacks, it’s been slow for him this season, but we’re super happy to have him”, James said.
“He showed what he can do today in the 45 minutes that he played. Everyone needs to be patient with him. He’s an amazing player, he’s still super young. He’s going to improve with time.”
Palmer started the match in Naples on the bench, but it was his halftime introduction that sparked Chelsea’s revival.
The Blues were 2-1 down when he entered the fray, but he inspired them to a comeback 3-2 win after assisting both of Joao Pedro’s second half goals.
“Of course he’s committed to Chelsea. He’s a Chelsea player and many players have speculation in transfer windows, it’s normal, but he’s conducted himself really well and we’re happy with him.”
Chelsea finished inside the top-eight with their win over Napoli and have now qualified automatically for the Round of 16 of the Champions League.
