Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has insisted that Martin Odegaard’s quality has never been in question and has backed the captain to rediscover his best form.
The Norwegian captain has suffered a dip in form and has received criticism for his below-par performances for the club in recent weeks.
He was substituted before the half hour mark in last Sunday’s 3-2 defeat to Manchester United, while there has also been calls for him to be dropped as captain of the club.
However, during his prematch press conference ahead of the Gunners’ clash against Leeds United on Saturday, Arteta has expressed confidence in the ability of the Norway international.
“Those are the numbers but we must give the full numbers”, the Spaniard stated.
“He has played less minutes than any other season because he has been injured three times. That’s the reality.
“We want to improve that, for sure, and we want him affecting the game in the areas that can win football matches”, Arteta added.
Arsenal head to Elland Road on Saturday for a tough test against Leeds United, who have only lost one of their last 11 matches across all competitions
The Gunners have seen their lead reduce to four points after their defeat last week as they chase their first league title since 2004.
Odegaard will be expected to lead the team once again as they chase victory to keep their gap to the chasing pack.
The 27-year-old has only scored once in the league this season, but a goal in Saturday’s affair would do a lot of good to his confidence.
“But if you know Martin and how he works every single day, I have no doubts that it will come”, Arteta continued.
Arsenal face Leeds United on Saturday in the EPL, before welcoming Chelsea to the Emirates Stadium for their second leg clash in the EFL Cup semifinals.
