Guardiola jokes about Man City’s transfer spending compared to rivals

Pep Guardiola was in playful mood as he joked about Manchester City’s recent transfer activity, claiming he “didn’t understand” why the club haven’t spent more money than their Premier League rivals.

City were active during the January transfer window, bringing in Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi, moves that pushed their total spending beyond £450 million over the past 12 months.

Even so, Guardiola was quick to downplay the figures, insisting that City still trail several rivals when it comes to net spend over a longer period.

Speaking ahead of Manchester City’s Carabao Cup semi-final clash with Newcastle, the Spaniard pointed out that City rank seventh for net spend over the last five years, a statistic he jokingly suggested was not good enough.

“I’m a little bit sad and upset because for the net spend for the last five years we are seventh in the Premier League, so I want to be the first,” he said.

“I don’t understand how the club doesn’t spend more money! I’m a little bit grumpy with them.

“We won in the past because we spent a lot but now six teams have to win the Premier League, the Champions League, the FA Cup because they spent more in the last five years. This is a fact, not an opinion.

“Good luck to the six teams who spent more in the last five years.”

While clearly delivered with a smile, Guardiola’s comments underline the growing competitiveness at the top of English football, where financial muscle is increasingly widespread.

As City prepare for another crucial cup night, the manager’s focus remains firmly on performances on the pitch, even as the spending debate continues to swirl around the Premier League.
