Everton Women confirm Brian Sorensen exit from club

Everton Women have confirmed the immediate departure of manager Brian Sorensen, as the club looks to reset its trajectory midway through a challenging Women’s Super League campaign.

The decision comes with the Toffees sitting ninth in the table, just four points above bottom-placed Liverpool.

Although momentum briefly swung Everton’s way with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Aston Villa last weekend: a result that halted a run of three consecutive league defeats, the club has opted to change course in pursuit of longer-term progress on the pitch.

The 45-year-old joined Everton in the summer of 2022 and was handed a contract extension until 2027 as recently as April.

However, despite flashes of promise, results and performances have not aligned consistently with expectations this season.

Assistant coaches Stephen Neligan and Ashley Tootle have also exited the club as part of the shake-up, signaling a broader reset behind the scenes.

Confirming the decision, Everton CEO Angus Kinnear acknowledged the contributions of the departing staff while underlining the need for a new approach.

“We would like to thank Brian, Stephen and Ashley for their hard work and efforts in their time at the Club,” he said.

“Sunday’s first win of the season at Goodison Park was important, but it has become evident that a change of direction is necessary to ensure the progression on the pitch we are all striving for.”

As Everton look to steady the ship for the remainder of the campaign, U18s coach Scott Phelan has been appointed interim head coach until the end of the season.

He will be supported by first-team coach Jennifer Foster and goalkeeping coach Ian McCaldon as the Toffees aim to climb the table and finish the season with renewed purpose.

With fixtures still to play and survival firmly in their own hands, Everton Women now turn the page, hoping the fresh setup can spark consistency and confidence when it matters most.
