Axel Disasi opens up on ‘bomb squad’ status at Chelsea

Axel Disasi is pleased to have ended his exile at Chelsea after joining West Ham United on loan until the end of the season during the winter transfer window.

The French defender joined the Blues in 2023 from Monaco, but fell out of favour with former manager Enzo Maresca.

The 27-year-old alongside some other players including England forward Raheem Sterling earned the nickname ‘bomb squad’, after they were not included in the manager’s plans.

Disasi initially turned down a move to West Ham last summer and trained with the Chelsea youth team, featuring in some of their matches before eventually completing a loan move to the Hammers last month.

Speaking during an interview, the 27-year-old opened up on his move to the London Stadium and how his final days at Chelsea felt.

“It has been really nice, my situation before was a little bit crazy. For me it is only a positive to be here, it feels great to be part of something”, Disasi admitted.

“In Chelsea the time was a little bit crazy but my background helped me to get through.

I stayed sharp, I was working hard and always made sure that my head stayed in the right way.”

Disasi has already played three times across all competitions for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side since making the switch, including twice in the Premier League.

The French centre-back will be hoping for an impressive performance during his loan spell at the Hammers, as he eyes an unlikely spot in France’s competitive squad for the upcoming World Cup.

“My family helped me a lot going through this”, Disasi added.

“During this period I saw that my background helped me a lot.”

West Ham United continue their battle for survival when they face Bournemouth on Saturday, hoping for a win to close the gap between them and Nottingham Forest in 17th spot.
