Howe laments Thiaw’s absence ahead of Newcastle’s UCL playoff clash with Qarabag

Eddie Howe has expressed disappointment over the absence of defender Malick Thiaw ahead of Newcastle United’s UCL playoff second leg clash against Qarabag later today.

The Magpies hold a five-goal advantage after easing to an emphatic 6-1 win in the first leg, but will be without the services of the German defender for the clash.

Thiaw picked up a booking in last week’s first leg – his third of the tournament and will automatically serve a one-game suspension for the second leg.

The 24-year-old has emerged as a key figure in Newcastle’s defence since his £34.5 million move from AC Milan last summer and has started in their last 38 matches across all competitions.

He scored their second in the eighth minute in last week’s clash and will be a big miss this time around, although he will be available for their Round of 16 clash.

Speaking during his prematch press conference, Howe revealed that the defender will be greatly missed in Tuesday’s clash at St James’ Park.

“It’s going to be a blow for us. I said that when the suspension was confirmed. A big loss for us at the heart of our defence”, Howe admitted.

“He has been a model of consistency, and his recent games have been some of his strongest of the season. He’s been superb and been an incredible signing for us.”

Meanwhile, Newcastle will be hoping to reach the Round of 16 of the Champions League for the first time in their history.

They already have one foot after their massive first leg win and will be eyeing another big win to send a statement to other competitors.

A clash against Chelsea or Barcelona awaits in the next round, with the draws scheduled to hold on Friday.
