Chelsea and West Ham United have both been fined by The Football Association following a heated “mass confrontation” that overshadowed a dramatic Premier League clash last month.
Momentum had swung sharply on the pitch as Chelsea roared back from two goals down to seal a pulsating 3-2 victory.
However, as the clock ticked into stoppage time, tempers flared and the contest spilled over.
The flashpoint arrived when Joao Pedro pushed Adama Traore after the latter had thrown Marc Cucurella, triggering a full-scale coming together of players from both sides.
As the situation escalated, referee Anthony Taylor consulted VAR and subsequently showed a straight red card to Jean-Clair Todibo for grabbing Pedro by the neck.
In the aftermath, disciplinary action followed swiftly. The Blues were fined £325,000, while the Hammers received a £300,000 penalty.
The FA charged Chelsea’s players for behaving in an “improper and/or provocative way”, while West Ham’s players were cited for being “improper and/or provocative and/or violent”. Both clubs admitted the charges.
The sanctions bring a costly conclusion to a night where late drama, both footballing and physical, took centre stage and serve as a firm reminder that discipline off the ball can carry consequences just as significant as moments on it.
