Man United’s Amorim gamble laid bare as £38.6m cost emerges

Manchester United’s decision to hand the reins to Ruben Amorim has come with a hefty financial hit, with new figures revealing the managerial change could cost the club as much as £38.6 million.

Amorim’s short-lived spell at Old Trafford came to an abrupt end on January 5, just 14 months after his arrival.

His dismissal followed a 1-1 draw with Leeds United, a result that proved to be the final straw after the former head coach publicly criticised the club’s hierarchy in the aftermath.

Momentum had already shifted months earlier. Sky Sports News previously reported that United paid £9.2m in November to appoint Amorim as successor to Erik ten Hag, whose own departure added a further £13.5m to the bill.

Now, fresh details released in a filing to the New York Stock Exchange have put the scale of the cost into sharper focus.

The club confirmed that £6.3m, the fee paid to prise Amorim and his staff away from Sporting CP, has been written off, alongside a further “provision of £15.9m” linked to the change.

When all elements are combined, the total cost of the Amorim era reaches £38.6m. On the pitch, the return was mixed, with 24 wins recorded from his 64 matches in charge across all competitions.

As United look ahead to yet another rebuild, the figures underline just how expensive managerial upheaval has become at the top end of the game.
