Arsenal star Calafiori hints at potential return to AS Roma

Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori still wants to play in the Serie A and has expressed desire to return to boyhood club AS Roma in the future.

The Italian defender rose through the ranks at Roma, playing for the youth team between 2010 and 2020, signing his first professional contract in 2018.

However, he struggled to secure regular game time and moved on loan to Genoa in 2022, before moving on to Basel and Bologna.

The 23-year-old then joined Arsenal in 2024, but has now revealed that he desires to return to Roma in the nearest future.

“I‘d like to return to Roma sooner or later. We can’t plan it, of course, but yes, I want to return,” Calafiori stated.

“It all started very well, with a goal. I played a lot for the first six months with Mourinho , even providing a few assists.

“Then came Bodo Glimt-Roma , and from that moment on I didn’t play again. I went to Genoa on loan, but I didn’t play there either.”

Calafiori has enjoyed an impressive spell at Arsenal, although he has been hit by injuries severally.

This season, he has already played 25 times across all competitions, including 20 in the Premier League, with the Gunners still competing for major trophies on all four fronts.

He still has about three years left on his contract, before deciding on what his next career move would be

“Only three appearances. In the meantime, Roma won the Conference. There was no more room for me”, Calafiori added.

For now, Calafiori’s focus will be finishing the season strongly with Arsenal, with their next Premier League clash coming against Brighton and Hove Albion on Wednesday.
