Jarrod Bowen delivered a decisive performance as West Ham United edged past Brentford to book a place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, keeping alive hopes of ending the club’s 46-year wait for the famous trophy.
The Hammers progressed after a dramatic 2-2 draw over 120 minutes before sealing a 5-3 victory in a tense penalty shootout.
Bowen was the standout performer, netting both West Ham goals during the match and calmly converting the first penalty of the shootout to set the tone for the hosts.
As the contest swung back and forth, Bowen’s double ensured West Ham stayed in the fight before the decisive spot-kicks ultimately sent them through to a quarter-final clash with Leeds United.
Meanwhile, the result adds fresh momentum to West Ham’s campaign as they continue battling in the Premier League while chasing cup success.
The Hammers are now unbeaten in their last five home games, a run that suggests their season may be turning a corner.
Reflecting on the victory, Bowen acknowledged the team’s struggles earlier in the campaign but believes recent performances show progress.
“Confidence comes from winning game. We didn’t win it on the night, we won it on penalties, which makes it a bit more special,” said Bowen.
“We haven’t been good enough this season, but we’re coming into the real business end of it now. There’s a big game coming up on Saturday, we’re into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, and things are on the up for us.
“But we have to keep doing it, keep demanding it, keep raising the level.”
West Ham supporters will be hoping this cup run leads to something historic.
The London club last lifted the FA Cup in 1980 when they defeated Arsenal in the final, and Bowen believes the squad has the belief to chase silverware once again.
Looking back at the turning point in their campaign, Bowen pointed to an earlier FA Cup encounter that helped spark their resurgence.
“I go back to the QPR game where I don’t want to say our season started, but that was the chance to turn it around and give us confidence and belief.
“We’ve done that in the Premier League and tonight was the same thing. We had to put in a good performance and we knew it’d be a tough game.
“Every FA Cup game we’ve had has gone to extra time now. But we want to get to the final, we want silverware at this club.
“It’s a dream of mine to win it [the FA Cup] and we’ve got a long way to get there, but tonight is a big night for everyone involved.”
With Bowen leading from the front and momentum building at the London Stadium, West Ham’s latest FA Cup surge could yet end their decades-long wait for glory.
