Michael Owen backs Carrick for long-term role at Manchester United

Michael Owen believes Michael Carrick is well qualified to be appointed as permanent manager of Manchester United at the end of the season.

Carrick rejoined the club in January on an interim basis until the end of the season following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim and has put himself in contention for the permanent role with impressive results since his arrival.

The Red Devils have lost just one of their eight games since then, winning six times and also recording one draw.

Despite these impressive results, Carrick has faced criticism on several occasions with many doubting his quality to lead the team if given the full-time job.

However, Owen has disregarded those critics and has backed his former teammate to secure the role permanently.

“I can’t believe people are questioning whether he should get the job,” Owen said.

“Manchester United have waited about 12 years – they’ve gone for proven, legends, everything since Sir Alex [Ferguson].”

Manchester United unbeaten start to the Premier League in 2026 was ended following their 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United in their last match.

The Red Devils return to action after an extended break on Sunday and will be hoping to return to winning ways when they face Aston Villa at Old Trafford.

Both sides are on 51 points in third and fourth on the standings, three points ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool in fifth and sixth place respectively.

A win however, will put them firmly in contention for a return to the Champions League after a two-year absence.

“And the one time they are starting to play well, get results, the fans are on board – you’re telling me at the end of the season if he gets third [place] they will say ‘thanks, but no thanks’. How is that possible?”, Owen added.
