Cody Gakpo has admitted disappointment after Liverpool fell to a 2-1 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League.
At the Amex Stadium, Liverpool struggled to maintain momentum as Danny Welbeck struck twice for the hosts.
Although Milos Kerkez restored parity midway through the first half, Brighton regained control early in the second period and held firm to secure all three points.
Reacting after the final whistle, Gakpo did not hide his frustration, especially given the team’s need for consistency at this stage of the campaign.
“Disappointed. Obviously we wanted to win, which is important in the situation we are in, but it didn’t go that way. So, it was a difficult afternoon,” he said.
However, the Dutch forward pointed to a recurring issue this season: Liverpool’s inability to build on positive results, including their recent win over Galatasaray.
“That’s frustrating. I think it’s happened a few times already this season, so that’s not good from our side. That’s frustrating.
“If we would know it then we would try to solve it but, like you said, it happened a few times already. So, we have to keep analysing that and to find maybe the spot that’s hurting us in those moments.”
The match also took an early turn when Hugo Ekitike was forced off, a setback Gakpo acknowledged as significant given the striker’s recent form.
“Obviously a big blow. I think everybody [can] see how well he’s doing, so that’s a big blow.”
Meanwhile, Brighton’s approach drew recognition from the Liverpool attacker, who credited the hosts for executing their game plan effectively.
“I think they were just being themselves. I think everybody knows how good they can be on the ball. They try to play their own game and it worked out well in moments for them.
“I think we just have to approach every game that we have to win it. I think that’s normal for a club this big and I think that’s also what we’re supposed to do in the situation we are in. We have to fight to win seven games.”
All in all, while the defeat dents Liverpool’s momentum, the message from Gakpo is clear: reset quickly, stay competitive, and push hard in the final stretch of the season.
