Jordan Henderson backs Ben White after boos from England fans

Jordan Henderson has defended England teammate Ben White after the defender was constantly jeered by supporters in Friday night’s 1-1 draw with Uruguay at Wembley.

The Arsenal defender received a first call-up to the national team earlier this week as a replacement for the injured Jarell Quansah, for the first time since he controversially left the squad during the 2022 FIFA World Cup,

White made himself available for selection for the remainder of Gareth Southgate’s tenure, before Thomas Tuchel finally handed him a first invitation in four years.

The 28-year-old came on in the 69th minute of the clash to loud boos from the home fans, which became much louder when he opened the scoring 12 minutes later.

However, Henderson who was also booed after his controversial transfer to the Saudi Pro League in 2023, has said that the whole team has thrown their support behind White.

As team-mates we are always there to support. I have been through it myself, but that is part and parcel of being an England player”, Henderson said.

“Some of the fans probably don’t even know why they are booing, they listen to what is being said in the media, and a lot of the time what the media says isn’t true.

“Not many people know the ins and outs of what happened in Qatar and it is for us to deal with internally. Ben has been good since he came back in and we will support him as team-mates.”

“A few of us have been there, it is difficult when it is you, but you have to try not to take it too personally”, the Brentford midfielder added.

White opened the scoring with a tap-in at the far post in the second half, but conceded a late penalty which allowed Uruguay back in the game.

Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde converted the spot-kick in additional time to seal a 1-1 result, as both sides shared the spoils in a feisty encounter.

“The media can spin things in certain ways, which isn’t always the truth and then fans can pick up on that and think it is the truth”, Henderson added.

“It is really difficult when that happens, so it is important for us to make sure he is OK, which I am sure he is. I was delighted he got on and got a goal, which is the most important thing.”

England will hope to return to winning ways when they face Japan in their second friendly match of the window on Tuesday at Wembley.
