Florian Wirtz has reflected on his challenging start at Liverpool, insisting the early struggles have ultimately sharpened his game and strengthened his mentality.
Arriving at Anfield in a blockbuster £116m move from Bayer Leverkusen, the German playmaker was tipped to hit the ground running.
However, adapting to the pace and physicality of the Premier League proved to be a tougher battle than expected.
Initially, Wirtz found it difficult to impose himself, going 22 appearances without finding the net.
Yet, as the season progressed, he began to turn the tide; stringing together six goals in 10 matches from Boxing Day to regain momentum before hitting another dry spell.
Behind the scenes, a tailored strength and conditioning programme played a crucial role in helping him adjust to the demands of English football.
As a result, Wirtz has grown more resilient, both physically and mentally.
“It wasn’t an easy phase,” Wirtz, speaking about his first few months in England, told German television show Sportschau.
“It’s sometimes good that things don’t always go upwards and that you experience a dip and grow stronger because of it.
“That’s how I see it now as well – it has made me a bit stronger. I had to overcome resistance and adapt. I had to learn to become stronger and hold onto the ball.”
Despite his mixed scoring form, Wirtz’s creative influence remains undeniable.
With over 70 chances created across the Premier League and Champions League, he has consistently provided opportunities; though teammates have struggled to convert them.
As the season enters its decisive stretch, Wirtz’s journey reflects a familiar football narrative: early setbacks, gradual adaptation, and a player emerging tougher, sharper, and ready to deliver when it matters most.
