Roberto De Zerbi targets long-term stay at Tottenham Hotspur

Roberto De Zerbi is hoping to achieve long-term success at Tottenham Hotspur following his appointment as new head coach of the North London club earlier this week.

De Zerbi was named as the successor to Igor Tudor, who was dismissed earlier in the week and arrived in North London on Wednesday to sign his five-year contract at the club.

The Italian becomes Spurs’ third head coach of the season, after Thomas Frank and Tudor, with the club rooted in the battle against relegation.

Frank was in charge from last summer until February when he was dismissed, with Tudor taking over on an interim basis.

However, he picked just one point from a possible 15 in the league and was dismissed, with De Zerbi coming in as his replacement.

Speaking in his first recorded message to the club’s supporters, the former Brighton and Marseille coach expressed determination to lead the club to glory on a long-term basis.

“I am very happy to [be] here with you. It is a very big honour to be here and I’m very proud to be your coach”, De Zerbi admitted.

Tottenham are currently 17th on the Premier League standings and are just a single point above the drop zone, with just seven games left this season.

De Zerbi’s first task will be keeping the club in the top-flight this campaign, as relegation could have severe impact on the Europa League champions.

“I want to give my best. I want to stay for a long time in this big club. See you soon”, De Zerbi added.

The Italian will meet the entire squad and begin full duties on Friday and will be in the dugout for the first time when Tottenham face Sunderland on April 12, hoping to turn around the club’s fortunes.
