Farke hails Leeds United’s FA Cup quarter-final triumph over West Ham United

Daniel Farke has heaped praises on Leeds United’s history-making win over West Ham United in the FA Cup quarter-final clash on Sunday.

The Whited edged their Premier League rivals 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time, to reach their first semifinal in the competition in 39 years.

Leeds United had raced into a two-goal lead in the clash, with goals from Ao Tanaka and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and were in course for a comfortable win.

However, they allowed their two-goal advantage slip in the closing stages of the encounter as West Ham scored twice in stoppage-time to send the remarkable game into extra-time.

“At least I’m old enough that I was already born when there was the last semifinal for Leeds United in the FA Cup in the 80s”, a delighted Farke said after the match.

“It was a crazy game and it has cost lots of energy, but in the FA Cup quarterfinal both teams are able to fight for quite another piece of history for the club.”

Mateus Fernandes and Axel Disasi scored both goals as West Ham sealed a remarkable comeback in the encounter.

With no goals after an additional 30 minutes of action, the game ultimately went to penalties to decide the winner of the last eight tie.

Leeds went first and scuffed their effort as West Ham’s fourth-choice goalkeeper Finlay Herrick, who only came on due to an injury to Alphonse Areola, saved Joel Piroe’s spot kick.

However, Lucas Perri saved from Jarrod Bowen and Pablo Felipe to send the Whites into the last four of the competition.

“To reach, for the first time since a while, the semifinal, the game should be like this with ups and downs and setbacks”, Farke added.

“We could have made our life a bit easier after an excellent start to the game. But West Ham is also a Premier League side who is of course giving everything and trying everything to come back into the game.”

Leeds United will now face Chelsea in the semifinals at Wembley, scheduled to hold on the weekend of 25 and 26 April.

Manchester City and Southampton, who shocked Arsenal in the quarter-finals, will face-off in the other last four clash.
