Arsenal’s title hopes suffered a significant setback as they fell to a shock 2–1 defeat to Bournemouth in Saturday’s early kickoff at the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners had ended a run of two-game losing streak by defeating Sporting CP in the UEFA Champions League in midweek and had hoped to extend their lead at the top of the standings to edge closer to a first league title in 22 years.
However, they produced a lackluster performance to suffer their fourth league defeat of the season and could now see their lead reduced to six points if Manchester City defeat Chelsea on Sunday.
Arsenal started off on the worst note as Bournemouth took the lead inside just 17 minutes as Adrien Truffert’s pass took a huge deflection off William Saliba and fell perfectly for Eli Junior Kroupi, who lashed home the opener.
The Gunners were given a way back in the game when a penalty kick was awarded after Ryan Christie handled inside the area.
Victor Gyokeres then stepped up and calmly converted from 12 yards to level the scoreline heading into the break.
Gyokeres then scored a second after the break, but it was ruled out for offside in the buildup before Djordje Petrovic saved an attempt from Declan Rice.
The visitors stunned Arsenal in the 74th minute as Alex Scott scored what proved to be the winner and despite late chances to Gabriel Jesus and Gyokeres, they held on to seal a memorable win.
Meanwhile, the heartbroken Arsenal suffered a third straight domestic defeat and now head into next weekend clash against Manchester City with no room for error.
Attention will now shift to the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final meeting with Sporting on Wednesday, where they hold a one-goal advantage from the first leg and will be aiming to reach the last four of the competition.
