Troost-Ekong dismisses retirement talk, eyes AFCON and World Cup goals

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has quelled rumours about his retirement, assuring fans that he remains fully committed to the national team.

The 31-year-old defender, who recently earned his 75th cap, reiterated his desire to continue contributing to the success of the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Speaking ahead of Nigeria’s final AFCON 2025 qualifier against Rwanda, Troost-Ekong reflected on his journey with the Super Eagles while expressing optimism about the future. Despite speculation surrounding his retirement, he insists he still has much to offer.

“It’s a question I get asked a lot,” Troost-Ekong admitted during a media briefing. “But at 31, I feel I’m playing some of my best football in recent years. I have some targets in sight—AFCON 2025 and the World Cup in 2026. After that, we’ll see what happens.”

The veteran centre-back, who played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s run to the AFCON final during their last campaign reveals his omission from the team is all in the hands of the coaches.

“It won’t be my decision alone. It will depend on the coaches. If I feel I am no longer an asset to the team, I’ll have that discussion,” he added.

Nigeria heads into Monday’s clash against Rwanda with qualification already secured, the Super Eagles aim to maintain their unbeaten record and close out the campaign on a high note.

For Troost-Ekong, the journey is far from over, and his sights remain firmly set on leading Nigeria to glory at both AFCON 2025 and the World Cup in 2026.
