Southampton’s Shea Charles eyes Man City FA Cup upset at Wembley

Southampton midfielder Shea Charles is gearing up for a defining moment as the Saints prepare to face Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.

The 22-year-old heads into the clash full of confidence after playing the hero in the previous round, where his late strike sealed a stunning 2-1 victory over Arsenal.

Coming off the bench, Charles made his mark when it mattered most, delivering a decisive contribution in a high-pressure moment.

“It was a mad one,” Charles tells Sky Sports.

“I did not start the game, so I knew I had to make an impact when I got on.

“I managed to do that and it was a great performance from the team.

“The atmosphere was incredible that night and the fans got what they deserved.”

Reliving the winning moment, Charles admitted the goal exceeded expectations but highlighted the importance of seizing opportunities in big games.

“It was unbelievable to score the winner.

“When you come on, you do not expect it, but when the opportunity comes you have to put it in the back of the net. It was a really good night.”

Now, the stakes rise even higher. The semi-final carries added emotion for the midfielder, who came through the ranks at Man City before making the switch to Southampton in 2023.

Facing his former club on such a stage only adds extra fuel to the occasion.

“A semi final at Wembley in the FA Cup is incredible, and to face Manchester City makes it even bigger.

“They are probably the best team in the country with their current form, so it will be a really good game.”

With family ties also leaning towards City, the encounter becomes even more personal for the midfielder.

“There are a lot of City fans in my family, so it adds something extra.

“Hopefully they will be supporting me on the day. I am really looking forward to it and it will be incredible.”

Despite the challenge ahead, Southampton arrive with strong momentum, unbeaten in over three months across all competitions.

That run has injected belief into the squad, with Charles emphasizing their adaptability and attacking options.

“There is a lot of confidence in the team right now.

“No matter who we are up against, we believe we can win games in different ways.”

He also pointed to the team’s tactical flexibility as a key strength heading into the showdown.

“We always try to play our way, but we can adapt.

“We have players who can hold the ball up, play through the middle or go down the sides.

“There are so many ways we can hurt teams, and that makes it exciting.”

As Wembley awaits, the stage is set for another potential upset as the Championship outfits are riding a wave of belief; and with Charles in confident form, they will be looking to carry that momentum into their biggest test yet.
