McFarlane hails level of competition at Chelsea despite poor form

Calum McFarlane believes Chelsea players remain fully committed to the club despite their struggles in recent months.

The Blues have hit a new low following six straight defeats in the Premier League, while they equalled an unwanted 114-year record by failing to score in the first first defeats.

Additionally, they have lost eight of their last 10 games across all competitions, including an embarrassing 8-2 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.

The club owners also dismissed head coach Liam Rosenior, who only replaced Enzo Maresca in January, with McFarlane taking over on interim role until the end of the season.

“They are always playing for places. We have a team full of internationals that we can call on so there is always competition for places at this football club”, McFarlane said on Thursday during the pre-match press conference ahead of the trip to Anfield this weekend.

“I would not agree with that. The performances haven’t been good enough. We are in a really bad run at the moment.”

Chelsea face Liverpool in Saturday’s early kickoff clash, hoping to bounce back to winning ways as they look to revive their pursuit of European football.

The Blues can no longer finish in the top five, but will be eyeing a sixth place finish to at least book a spot in Europe ahead of next season.

“The Leeds performance was a glimmer where we thought we could build on that but we weren’t able to do that. I see these boys every day, every training session, every meeting and in the gym”, McFarlane added.

“They are in a good place to go and attack games, we just haven’t been able to translate that to the game on Monday so hopefully we can improve that on Saturday.”

Chelsea will face Manchester City in the FA Cup final on May 26, offering them a chance to win a major silverware to salvage a difficult campaign.
