Chelsea have officially confirmed the appointment of Xabi Alonso as the club’s new men’s team manager ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The former Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid coach will officially begin work at Stamford Bridge on July 1, 2026, after signing a four-year contract with the Premier League giants.
Alonso arrives in west London with a growing reputation as one of Europe’s brightest managerial minds after guiding Bayer Leverkusen to a historic unbeaten Bundesliga title-winning campaign in 2023/24.
The Blues believe the Spaniard’s elite-level coaching experience, leadership qualities and tactical philosophy make him the ideal figure to lead the club into a new era.
Chelsea highlighted Alonso’s “character and integrity” as key reasons behind the decision, while also praising his ability to build a winning culture both on and off the pitch.
The 44-year-old enjoyed a glittering playing career, winning major honours with clubs including Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, alongside helping Spain lift the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Now, Alonso is preparing for what could be the biggest managerial challenge of his career.
“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club,” said Xabi after his appointment.
“From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition.
“We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.
“There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it.
“Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies.”
Chelsea’s hierarchy see Alonso as the perfect long-term leader capable of restoring sustained success at Stamford Bridge after several inconsistent seasons.
The club believes his modern tactical identity, experience at elite clubs and ability to develop young players align perfectly with their long-term sporting vision.
Alonso’s arrival also signals Chelsea’s intent to compete again at the highest level domestically and in Europe, with expectations already rising among supporters ahead of the new campaign.
The Blues ended their announcement by expressing confidence in the partnership and their ambition to return major silverware to Stamford Bridge under Alonso’s leadership.
