Michael Carrick confirmed as new Manchester United permanent coach

Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Michael Carrick as permanent head coach on a two-year deal after an impressive spell as interim coach.

The Englishman was appointed to lead the club until the end of the season in January and has overseen remarkable improvement, leading them to a third placed finish and back to the UEFA Champions League after a two-year hiatus.

Carrick took over from Ruben Amorim, who endured a difficult spell at the club and led them to finish 15th last season, while they were also defeated 1-0 in the Europa League final by Tottenham Hotspur.

The Red Devils have won 11 of their 16 games since Carrick took over and the former Middlesbrough manager was also included in the Premier League’s manager of the season shortlist.

“Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honour”, Carrick said.

“I know what it takes to succeed here; my focus is now on helping the players to reach the standards that we expect at this incredible club, which we know that this group is more than capable of producing.”

Carrick will be joined in the role by Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Travis Binnion, Jonny Evans and Craig Mawson.

As a player, Carrick played 464 games for the club, winning five Premier League titles, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League and the FIFA Club World Cup.

“I have worked with a number of the players already and have obviously continued to watch the team closely in recent years, I have total belief in their talents, dedication and ability to be successful here”, Carrick added.

“There is still a lot to fight for this season, we are ready to pull everyone together and give the fans the performances that their loyal support deserves.”

Meanwhile, Manchester United will conclude their campaign with a clash against Brighton and Hove Albion on the final day of the 2025-26 season on Sunday.
