Chelsea and the wider football community are mourning the loss of club legend Bobby Tambling, who has passed away at the age of 84.
The prolific striker enjoyed a remarkable career at Stamford Bridge, scoring 202 goals in 370 appearances and holding the record as Chelsea’s all-time leading goalscorer for nearly five decades before Frank Lampard surpassed the milestone in 2013.
Tambling’s death was confirmed by his former club Crosshaven, where he remained a beloved figure long after his playing days came to an end.
Tambling made his Chelsea debut as a 17-year-old in 1959 and quickly established himself as one of the most feared forwards in English football.
His achievements included helping Chelsea win the League Cup in 1965, scoring against Leicester City in the final.

In recent years, Tambling had been living with dementia, but his influence on the game and those around him never diminished.

“Bobby leaves an enormous hole in all our lives. We are all better, kinder, and richer for having known him.
“His warmth, his wisdom, his humour and his love will stay with us forever. To his loving family, his close friends, and his adoring Chelsea family — we send our deepest, most heartfelt condolences.
“We have all lost a true legend, and a very special man.”
