South Africa recorded their first point at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament after their 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic.
Bafana Bafana suffered a 2-0 loss to co-hosts Mexico in their opening match in the World Cup opener last Thursday and needed to avoid defeat to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds alive heading into the final day.
Meanwhile, Czech were also beaten 2-1 by South Korea in their opener, and they also needed to avoid defeat as well.
The European side were the better team from the first whistle and Bayer Leverkusen forward Patrik Schick should have put them ahead, but his header inside two minutes was a weak one and was well collected by South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
However, they were soon ahead few minutes later as Michal Sidalek opened the scoring after a fine team move. It marked the fastest goal of the tournament so far as well.
While South Africa started to grow into the game, they struggled to test the Czech Republic goalkeeper and had several long range efforts fly wide, with the first half ending in a 1-0 lead for the Europeans.
Czech began the second half brightly once again and Williams was comfortable when saving a header from Schick in the opening exchanges.
South Africa then narrowly missed the mark with a long range effort and with the game heading into its final few minutes, they were handed a lifeline in the clash.
A penalty was awarded for a handball inside the box and Teboho Mokoena fired in confidently to level the scoreline.
Bafana Bafana could have sealed a late win but could not hit the target and will now be confident after picking up their first point of the tournament.
They face South Korea in their final match next Thursday, as a win would see them advance to the knockout rounds for the first time in their history.
