Tunisia dismiss Sabri Lamouchi after heavy defeat to Sweden

Tunisia have dismissed Sabri Lamouchi following their humiliating 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening World Cup clash last weekend.

The African side had also suffered a 5-0 defeat to Belgium in a warmup match and suffered another embarrassing defeat at the Mundial, which led to the sacking of the Frenchman.

“An agreement has been officially reached to dismiss coach Sabri Lamouchi”, Tunisia FA said.

“Plans are under way ‌to appoint ‌Mondher Kebaier as the national team ‌coach [on an interim basis].”

Meanwhile, Lamouchi had expressed disappointment over the defeat after the match and had hoped for improvement.

“It’s a difficult loss. It’s painful. Starting the competition with this bad of a loss is indeed difficult,” Lamouchi told the post-match news conference.

“With world-class players that we have in the two Swedish forwards, it’s something that you don’t recover from. We made way too many mistakes.”

Lamouchi becomes the fourth manager to be dismissed at the World Cup. Tunisia have also previously sacked Henryk Kasperczak during the 1998 World Cup, but he lasted two games and failed to win either of both matches.

South Korea also sacked Cha Bum-kun during the same World Cup tournament, while the last was Spain’s dismissal of Julen Lopetegui in 2018, after he agreed a deal to join Real Madrid, despite being under contract at the Spanish national team.

Premier League players Yasin Ayari (2), Victor Gyokeres and Alexander Isak were all on the scoresheet for Sweden, while Mattias Svanberg added a fifth goal as they sealed a 5-1 victory to open their campaign.

Tunisia, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back from that heavy defeat and secure their first win of the tournament against Japan on Sunday.
