Mexico became the first nation to book their place in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament after their 1-0 win over South Korea in the early hours of Friday.
The co-host had already defeated South Africa 2-0 in the opening game and needed a win to book their place and seal top spot in Group A.
A second half goal from Luis Romo after an error from the South Korean goalkeeper sealed maximum points and a match at the Estadio Azteca in their Round of 32 clash.
Both sides entered the clash with wins in their first game, but the first half was largely uneventful with very little to trouble both goalkeepers.
However, a howler from Kim Seung-gyu in the second half, after the South Korean goalkeeper spilled the ball inside the area allowed city boy Romo to lash home into the back of the net.
Edson Alvarez then produced a superb goal-line clearance to deny Son Heung-Min, although it was eventually ruled offside by the assistant referee.
Raul Jimenez almost doubled Mexico’s tally in the 75th minute, but he was thwarted by Seung-gyu, who denied him at the near post.
Obed Vargas was also denied as Mexico looked to score a second and put the result beyond doubt. However, South Korea upped the tempo in search of an equalizer and Raul Rangel produced a stunning double save to deny them an equalizer late in the game.
The game ended 1-0 in favour of the co-host, while South Korea must now avoid defeat in their final game against South Africa to progress to the next round.
Mexico will now conclude their group stage campaign against Czech Republic on Thursday, hoping to continue their perfect start to the World Cup.
