Gary O’Neil takes Ipswich job after McKenna exit

Ipswich Town have moved quickly to appoint Gary O’Neil as their new manager following the departure of Kieran McKenna, with the former Wolves boss taking charge of the club’s Premier League journey.

O’Neil has signed a three-year contract at Portman Road and becomes the man tasked with continuing the progress made under McKenna, who guided Ipswich back to the top flight before leaving the club to focus on spending more time with his family.

The appointment marks a new chapter for Ipswich, who are looking for stability and fresh leadership ahead of a demanding Premier League campaign.

O’Neil expressed his excitement at taking over and highlighted the responsibility that comes with leading a club with such strong support.

“It is an honour to be appointed manager of this great football club,” O’Neil told the club’s official website.

“I have followed the progress the club has made over the last few years closely and to now have the opportunity to lead Ipswich Town in the Premier League is something I am hugely excited by.”

The 43-year-old also acknowledged the expectations surrounding the role, with Ipswich supporters eager to see the club compete successfully after their impressive rise through the divisions.

“There is a strong vision and ambition at this club and I am fully aware of the responsibility that brings, given how much it means to its supporters and to the community of Ipswich and Suffolk.”

O’Neil arrives with Premier League experience and a reputation for developing competitive teams.

He was one of the leading candidates considered after McKenna’s exit, alongside former Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior.

The new Ipswich boss most recently worked at Strasbourg, replacing Rosenior in January after the latter moved to Stamford Bridge.

O’Neil guided the French club to an eighth-place finish, narrowly missing out on European qualification.

His arrival also carries an interesting personal connection, having previously represented Ipswich’s local rivals Norwich City, making 51 appearances between 2014 and 2016.

Now, his focus turns fully to Portman Road as he prepares to build his own identity at Ipswich.

The challenge is significant, but O’Neil believes the foundations are already in place.

“We all know the challenge ahead as we prepare for the season together and I’m excited to meet everyone and get to work.”

With Premier League football returning to Ipswich, O’Neil’s first task will be proving that the club’s remarkable rise can continue at the highest level.
