Arteta hails Christian Norgaard’s Arsenal impact after Everton switch

Mikel Arteta has bid an emotional farewell to Christian Norgaard following the Danish midfielder’s move from Arsenal to Everton, describing him as one of the key personalities who helped strengthen the culture inside the Gunners’ dressing room.

Although Norgaard spent just one season at the Emirates Stadium, Arteta believes the experienced midfielder left a lasting impression that extended far beyond his performances on the pitch.

The Denmark international completed a reported £7 million transfer to Everton after arriving at Arsenal from Brentford for £10 million only last summer.

While his stay in North London proved relatively brief, his influence behind the scenes earned the admiration of teammates and coaching staff alike.

Speaking after confirming the midfielder’s departure, Arteta reflected on why Arsenal targeted Norgaard in the first place and why the club always valued his leadership qualities.

“He played a tremendous role for us,” said Arteta.

The Arsenal manager explained that Norgaard fulfilled exactly the role he had envisioned when bringing him to the club.

“When I brought him here I said that he could be our glue player. He has an incredible capacity to bring players together and keep the standards high.”

Those comments offer a glimpse into the importance Arteta places on leadership and dressing-room culture, two qualities that have become central to Arsenal’s resurgence in recent seasons.

While Norgaard was never considered one of Arsenal’s headline stars, his professionalism, experience and calm presence made him an important figure within the squad.

Arteta also acknowledged that the midfielder produced several impressive performances whenever called upon, despite finding regular starts difficult to secure in one of the Premier League’s strongest midfield departments.

“When he played, he had some really good moments as well. But I understand to fulfil that role for long periods is not easy.”

Competition for places at Arsenal remained fierce throughout the campaign, limiting Norgaard’s opportunities despite his consistency and reliability.

Rather than allowing the midfielder to remain a squad player, Arsenal agreed to facilitate his move to Everton, where he is expected to play a much more prominent role.

Arteta believes the transfer represents an excellent opportunity for the 32-year-old to continue competing at the highest level while working under a coaching setup the Arsenal boss greatly respects.

“He had a massive opportunity with a manager and a club I know really well. I wish him all the best and thank you.”

The heartfelt farewell highlights the mutual respect between player and manager, with Arteta clearly appreciating both Norgaard’s contribution on the field and his influence away from it.

For Everton, the signing represents an experienced addition to the midfield.

Norgaard arrives with years of Premier League experience gained at Brentford and Arsenal, offering composure, tactical intelligence and leadership qualities that could prove invaluable over a demanding campaign.

His ability to shield the defence, dictate the tempo of matches and organise teammates has long been regarded as one of his greatest strengths.

Those attributes should make him an important figure as Everton continue building under their current project.

Meanwhile, Arsenal move forward with confidence in the depth of their midfield options but lose a respected senior figure who helped maintain the high standards Arteta has worked tirelessly to establish.

Sometimes a player’s greatest value cannot be measured purely by goals, assists or appearances. In Norgaard’s case, Arteta’s words suggest his biggest contribution was helping shape the culture inside one of Europe’s most ambitious dressing rooms.

As he begins a new chapter at Everton, Norgaard departs North London with the respect of his manager, teammates and supporters—an indication that his impact at Arsenal extended well beyond the statistics.
