Bhatia breaks silence on Liverpool deal as FSG keeps control

Amit Bhatia has broken his silence on the proposed Liverpool investment, insisting that Fenway Sports Group (FSG) remains firmly in control of the Premier League giants.

Bhatia, who is leading a consortium that includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has spoken publicly for the first time since an agreement was reportedly reached for the group to acquire a minority stake in Liverpool.

According to Sky News, the consortium is closing in on a deal to purchase roughly one-third of the club.

However, Bhatia has moved quickly to clarify what the proposed investment means for Liverpool’s ownership structure.

Speaking to LFCTV, he stressed that the transaction is still subject to the necessary regulatory process and that FSG will remain the club’s decision-makers.

The clarification will be significant for Liverpool supporters, particularly amid growing interest surrounding the club’s future ownership and investment structure.

Rather than presenting the agreement as a takeover, Bhatia described the proposed arrangement as a partnership with FSG.

“I think again it’s very important to emphasise that we’re going through a regulatory process,” said Bhatia.

“That regulatory process is under way and we have to be incredibly respectful of that process.

“Number two, I think it’s important to be very clear that this club remains under the ownership of FSG. FSG are the decision-makers and this is their ownership.

“They have invited us and we’re very fortunate to be a partner as a minority alongside them.

“And so my involvement really, or our involvement really, would be in any capacity that FSG felt that we could be useful to them.

“So, subject to regulatory [approval], in any capacity that FSG wants us to be involved, in any way that they think that we can add value for the betterment of the football club, is how we will make ourselves available at all times.”

Bhatia also highlighted the different backgrounds within the consortium and suggested those varied experiences could provide Liverpool with fresh ideas.

The proposed investors are not simply looking at the immediate picture, with Bhatia making it clear that he believes Liverpool still have considerable room for growth.

“We come from different geographies, we come from different professions, and hopefully with that you bring different experiences and ideas, different thoughts.

“If we are called upon, if there’s any area that we have this expertise in or that FSG would like to discuss with us, our thoughts or our involvement, we would absolutely be there.

“We believe that the potential for the football club is still vast ahead of us and we have had some discussions with FSG as to those thoughts.

“And hopefully if everything goes well, our association with the club will also be for a very, very long period of time.”

That long-term outlook could become one of the most intriguing aspects of the proposed Liverpool deal.

Bhatia is not positioning the consortium as a group arriving to take over the running of the club.

Instead, the focus appears to be on providing expertise, investment and additional commercial opportunities while allowing FSG to retain control.

The comments also point towards a potentially significant relationship between Bhatia’s consortium and FSG beyond the initial investment.

Liverpool remain one of football’s biggest global brands, and Bhatia believes the club’s commercial and sporting potential has yet to be fully realised.

“And so as and when we can see those opportunities and we feel that they’re in the best interests of the football club, as an entire group we’ll come together and try to support in the best way that we think we can.

“That’s very exciting to think about, because as I said, the potential is enormous. And we’re very excited to see what the future holds for us in that regard.”

For Liverpool, the immediate priority will be completing the regulatory process before the investment can formally move forward.

For Bhatia and his consortium, however, the message is already clear: this is a minority partnership with FSG, not a takeover.

And if the deal receives the necessary approval, the Reds could have a new group of high-profile investors ready to help shape the club’s next chapter — while FSG continues to call the shots.
