Premier League side Manchester City have completed the signing of Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea in a deal worth around £125 million.
Fernandez’s future has been up in the air since the second half of last season, with multiple reports linking him with an exit from the London club.
The 25-year-old joined Chelsea in a then-British record £106.8 million from Benfica in the winter transfer window in 2023, but has now left the club after three-and-a-half years.
“Manchester City have completed the signing of Enzo Fernández from Chelsea on a five-year contract”, Enzo’s arrival was announced on the club’s official website.
“The Argentina international’s deal means he will remain at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2031.
“At just 25, Fernández is armed with a wealth of top-level experience, having won four major trophies during his time playing on homeland with both Defensa y Justicia and River Plate, before helping Benfica on their way to Primeira Liga success and becoming a key member of the Chelsea team that won the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup in 2025.
“Indeed, during his time in west London he developed a reputation as one of the most technically gifted central midfielders in the Premier League.”
Fernandez was linked with a move to Real Madrid for majority of the summer, before Manchester City entered the picture and stepped up their pursuit.
City failed to meet Chelsea’s deadline of last week before turning in a late deadline day bid to complete a deal for the midfielder.
The Argentine now reunites with former head coach Enzo Maresca at the Etihad Stadium, after the Italian also took over from Pep Guardiola earlier in the summer.
Speaking after signing his new deal, Fernandez expressed delight at joining the former Premier League champions and is looking forward to a successful spell at the club.
“Manchester City are the most successful club in England in recent times,” he said.
“Every player wants to be part of a club like this because everyone knows how well-run City are.
“I could not be happier to be here, and I am ready for the challenge of helping City continue winning trophies. This is a club built for success.
“If you look across the squad, City have quality in every area. I want to learn from my new teammates and become a better player.
“I pride myself on continually improving my game. Anyone who’s worked with me will know how hard I train every single day and how much I put into matches. I give absolutely everything and I can promise Manchester City that will continue now I’m here”, the former Benfica star concluded.
The Argentine is in line to make his debut for the club this weekend when they face newly promoted Coventry City in the Premier League as they aim to maintain their perfect start.
