England’s Toney court hearing delayed over alleged Soho assault

England striker Ivan Toney will have to wait another week before appearing in court over an alleged assault at a nightclub in London.

The 30-year-old was due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday to face an allegation of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

However, the hearing has now been postponed until October 1 after a request for a delay was received by the court on Wednesday night.

Toney, who is from Northampton, is accused of assaulting Saber Da Silva during an incident at a nightclub on Wardour Street in Soho, central London, on December 6 last year.

The Metropolitan Police investigated the incident before Toney was formally charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm on July 31.

Thursday’s hearing was expected to be Toney’s first appearance before the court in relation to the allegation. The reason for the requested delay was not disclosed in the information provided by the court.

When the criminal case first emerged, a spokesperson for Toney said the striker intends to contest the charge and would seek to clear his name through the legal process.

“Ivan acknowledges the charge and although he is naturally shocked, he looks forward to being given the opportunity to clear his name in court,” they said in a statement.

Toney remains entitled to the presumption of innocence unless and until he is proven guilty.

The legal development comes after a significant period in the striker’s football career. Toney represented England at this summer’s World Cup and has earned 10 international caps, scoring once for the Three Lions.

The forward began his professional career with Northampton before spells at Newcastle United and Peterborough United.

He established himself as a prolific Premier League striker after joining Brentford in 2020, scoring 72 goals across four seasons with the Bees.

Toney subsequently made a high-profile move away from English football in 2024, joining Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli.

His next court appearance is now scheduled for Thursday, October 1, when he is expected to face the assault allegation for the first time.

Until then, the case remains before the courts, with the outcome yet to be determined.
