Hibernian appoint unbeaten Belgian title winner Marink Reedijk as new boss

Hibernian have turned to Marink Reedijk as their new manager, handing the Dutch coach the task of steering the club away from a difficult start to the Scottish Premiership season.

The 35-year-old succeeds David Gray, who was dismissed eight days before Reedijk’s appointment following Hibs’ disappointing opening run.

Reedijk arrives at Easter Road with an impressive recent achievement behind him, having guided SK Beveren to the Belgian second-tier title during an unbeaten campaign.

Beveren became the first team since 1934 to win the division without suffering a defeat, giving Reedijk a significant achievement to take into his first senior managerial role in Scotland.

The Dutchman has also gained experience in prominent academy environments, having previously worked with Ajax and West Bromwich Albion.

Now, his attention turns to rebuilding momentum at Hibernian, who currently sit 10th in the Scottish Premiership after collecting just two victories from their opening seven matches.

Reedijk said he was excited by the opportunity and the scale of the club he is joining.

“I am honoured to be appointed manager of Hibernian Football Club.

“This is one of the biggest clubs in Scottish football, with a unique history, identity and supporter base, and I am excited to experience that passion and connection first-hand.

“I can feel the ambition and see the clarity of what the club is trying to achieve. That was a big part of what attracted me here.

“I want us to be an assertive team – brave, intense and committed. A team that gives everything, plays with purpose and gives our supporters something to really get behind.

“There is quality and potential in the squad, and good work has already been done. My first job is to get to know the players, build on those foundations and make sure we are ready for Dundee United.”

Reedijk will have a short period to familiarise himself with his new squad before his first competitive assignment.

The new Hibs boss is scheduled to travel with the team to La Manga on Saturday for a training camp, where he will begin implementing his ideas and assessing the players available to him.

His first match in charge is set to come on October 10, when Hibernian travel to face Dundee United in the Scottish Premiership.

The timing gives Reedijk an opportunity to use the international break to work closely with his players before the pressure of competitive football returns.

Hibernian will hope the change in the dugout can spark a turnaround after a difficult opening seven league matches.

For Reedijk, the challenge is clear: translate the unbeaten success he enjoyed with Beveren into a competitive Hibernian side capable of climbing the Scottish Premiership table.

His arrival also represents a significant opportunity for a young coach stepping into one of Scottish football’s biggest clubs. The next few weeks will show how quickly his methods can take hold at Easter Road.
