Arteta reveals how he turned Arsenal’s office upside down

Mikel Arteta has revealed the extraordinary stunt he pulled on his first day as Arsenal manager, admitting that he turned the club’s office upside down to challenge staff and set the tone for his leadership.

The Spaniard, who took charge of the Gunners in December 2019, recalled deliberately throwing computers, laptops and cables onto the floor before gathering everyone in the room for an unexpected challenge.

Arteta wanted to make a statement about the standards, commitment and collective responsibility he expected from the people around him. Rather than delivering a conventional introductory speech, he chose a dramatic demonstration designed to force his new colleagues to work together.

Speaking to The Athletic, the Arsenal boss explained how the unusual exercise unfolded.

“On my first day as new Arsenal manager, I had demolished the office”.

“I just destroyed the office and put everything on the floor — the computers, the laptops, the cables. Then I brought everybody in”, told The Athletic.

“I said: ‘If you want me to help you enjoy your profession and your life and the passion that we all share, you have two minutes to put this in order and be ready to work together.’”

Arteta’s message was straightforward: building a successful football club requires more than individual talent. Everyone must understand their responsibilities, share a common purpose and be prepared to work collectively towards the same objectives.

By scattering the office equipment, the former Arsenal captain created a situation that demanded immediate cooperation. Staff members had to respond to the challenge together, reflecting the collective mentality he wanted to establish throughout the club.

The exercise also carried an element of risk. Arteta was a relatively young manager taking charge of one of England’s biggest clubs, and his approach could easily have backfired if his staff had rejected the unconventional introduction.

He acknowledged that the stunt might have ended his managerial career before it had properly begun.

“That could have been my managerial career because if that would have stayed the same way, I had no job anymore!”.

The anecdote offers a glimpse into Arteta’s leadership philosophy and his determination to reshape Arsenal’s working culture from the moment he arrived at the Emirates Stadium.

When he took over from Unai Emery in December 2019, Arsenal were looking for stability and a clear direction after a difficult period. Arteta was tasked with rebuilding the team, restoring belief and establishing a consistent identity on and off the pitch.

His first-day challenge reflected the importance he placed on collective standards, discipline and shared responsibility. For Arteta, creating the right environment was part of the broader task of transforming Arsenal into a team capable of competing for major honours.

The Spaniard’s approach has since become a defining feature of his management, with a strong emphasis on detail, accountability and unity.

His story also highlights the personality behind Arsenal’s touchline intensity. While supporters often see Arteta directing players during matches, his account reveals how far he was willing to go to communicate his expectations behind the scenes.

What began as a chaotic scene in the office was intended to deliver a simple lesson: everyone had a role to play, and nobody could afford to stand aside.

Arteta’s gamble may have seemed extreme, but it captured the urgency with which he approached the Arsenal rebuild. From his first day, he wanted those around him to understand that creating a winning culture would require everyone to pull in the same direction.
