Al-Nassr’s Ronaldo declares himself football’s greatest as 1,000-goal target looms

Cristiano Ronaldo has doubled down on his claim to be the greatest footballer of all time, insisting that his remarkable goal-scoring numbers speak for themselves as attention intensifies around his pursuit of 1,000 career goals.

The Portugal captain, speaking in an interview with CNN Portugal, expressed frustration that the conversation surrounding his achievements has increasingly centred on the historic milestone rather than the goals he continues to score.

At this stage of his career, Ronaldo remains focused on performing on the pitch rather than allowing the pressure of reaching four figures to define his achievements. The Al-Nassr forward believes his accomplishments deserve recognition in their own right, regardless of whether he eventually reaches the landmark.

“People aren’t appreciating what I’m doing right now, my goals. They’re more concerned with how many goals I have left to reach 1,000,” he told CNN Portugal.

“I don’t like that. I really don’t. Things have to happen naturally. Whether I score 920 goals, 925, 930…

“I’m the greatest in history. Period. When it comes to scoring goals, the numbers speak for themselves.

“I’m not going to sit here and say that I have to reach 1,000 goals. If I get there, fantastic.”

Ronaldo’s comments underline his determination to enjoy the final stages of his career without becoming consumed by the numbers surrounding his legacy. Rather than treating 1,000 goals as an obligation, the forward has made it clear that he wants his performances to determine how far he can go.

The milestone would represent another extraordinary chapter in a career already defined by records, individual awards and sustained success at the highest level. Ronaldo has built his reputation through prolific spells at Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Al-Nassr, while also delivering consistently for Portugal on the international stage.

His rivalry with Lionel Messi has fuelled years of debate over football’s greatest-ever player, with supporters often pointing to goals, trophies, individual honours and influence on the game to support their arguments.

However, Ronaldo’s latest declaration leaves little doubt about where he stands in that conversation. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner believes his scoring record provides sufficient evidence to support his position, regardless of competing opinions.

For now, the 1,000-goal target remains a major talking point whenever Ronaldo takes to the pitch. Yet his message is clear: he wants the goals he scores today to matter just as much as the historic number he may eventually reach.

Whether he crosses that landmark or falls short, Ronaldo is determined to let his performances shape the final chapter of his career rather than allow the chase itself to become the story.
