Borussia Dortmund have rewarded head coach Niko Kovac with a contract extension until June 2029 after the Croatian helped restore stability and improve results at the Bundesliga club.
Dortmund announced the new deal on Tuesday ahead of their Champions League meeting with Bodø/Glimt, underlining the club’s confidence in a manager who has transformed their fortunes since taking charge in January 2025.
Kovač arrived when Dortmund were struggling in 11th place in the Bundesliga. He subsequently guided the team to a fourth-place finish, securing Champions League qualification before leading them to second place last season.
The 54-year-old has continued that progress into the current campaign, with Dortmund recording four wins from their opening five Bundesliga matches following a summer of significant changes.
His improved results have convinced the club’s hierarchy that continuity is the best route forward as Dortmund look to challenge consistently at the top of German football.
Dortmund managing director for sport Lars Ricken praised Kovač’s influence, pointing to the progress made under his leadership and the trust he has established within the club.
“We’ve been on a very good path with Niko Kovač since he took office a little over a year and a half ago,” Dortmund managing director for sport Lars Ricken said. “He has consistently developed the team and enjoys great acceptance within our club.”
Ricken also described the contract extension as “a clear sign of continuity and stability at Borussia Dortmund.”
The decision reflects Dortmund’s desire to build on their recent progress rather than risk disrupting a project that has delivered improved league performances and a stronger position in European competition.
The club have also extended the contracts of Kovac’s brother, Robert Kovač, and assistant coach Filip Tapalović, maintaining stability within the coaching staff.
Dortmund have highlighted the team’s impressive Bundesliga points record under the Croatian as further evidence of his impact. The side averages 2.15 points per game under Kovač, their best return under any head coach.
That consistency has been central to Dortmund’s recovery after a difficult period before his appointment. His task now is to turn that progress into sustained domestic success while keeping the club competitive in the Champions League.
Sports director Ole Book also expressed confidence in the manager, highlighting the close and trusting relationship they have developed.
For Kovač, the extension represents a significant vote of confidence from a club with high expectations and a demanding fanbase.
The former Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt coach has previously managed at the highest level of German football, but his work at Dortmund has provided another opportunity to establish a long-term project built around consistency and collective improvement.
With his future secured until June 2029, Kovač can now focus on strengthening Dortmund’s title challenge, maintaining their Champions League ambitions and continuing the upward trajectory that persuaded the club to commit to him.
Dortmund’s decision sends a clear message: the club believe the Croatian is the right man to lead their next phase, and they are prepared to give him time to turn recent progress into lasting success.
