Bournemouth make history with Europa League win over Sturm Graz

Bournemouth marked their European home debut in style after securing a commanding 3-0 victory over Sturm Graz in the Europa League, extending Marco Rose’s perfect start in the competition.

Evanilson, Rayan and Álvaro Rodríguez found the net as the Cherries delivered a historic night at the Vitality Stadium, giving more than 12,000 supporters a result worthy of the occasion.

The victory followed Bournemouth’s impressive 2-1 away win against Real Sociedad in their opening European fixture, further strengthening their early momentum in the competition.

However, Thursday’s encounter carried significance beyond the three points. It was Bournemouth’s first-ever European match on home soil, marking a remarkable turnaround for a club that had endured financial turmoil and fought its way back from the depths of English football.

Supporters in the North Stand unveiled a giant tifo bearing the words “Minus 17 to European dreams,” referencing the 17-point deduction imposed on the club at the start of the 2008/09 season following its exit from administration.

The display offered a powerful reminder of how far Bournemouth have travelled.

Eighteen years earlier, the club were bottom of League Two and preparing for a 4-1 defeat away to Shrewsbury Town. This time, the Vitality Stadium was filled with European Tour flags, while Unchained Melody rang out around the ground.

Chief executive Jim Frevola had promised to “make fans cry”, and the emotion surrounding the historic occasion suggested that the night lived up to those expectations.

Despite the pre-match celebrations, Bournemouth initially struggled to find their rhythm. Rose made five changes to his starting lineup, and the hosts lacked their usual attacking fluency during the opening stages.

Marcus Tavernier missed an early opportunity after Adam Smith produced a rare moment of quality down the right before delivering a low cross into the penalty area. Tavernier, however, sent his first-time effort wide.

Bafodé Diakité appeared to have opened the scoring midway through the first half when he bundled the ball into the net from close range following a corner. His celebrations were short-lived, with the goal correctly ruled out for handball.

Sturm Graz’s Belmin Baganovic also attempted to win a penalty after a challenge from Smith but was instead booked for simulation.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 43rd minute, with Evanilson producing a finish worthy of Bournemouth’s historic night.

Left unmarked approximately 15 yards from goal, the Brazilian met Smith’s cross with a superb looping header that sailed over goalkeeper Daniil Khudyakov before dropping into the net.

It was a fitting moment for the striker to write his name into the club’s European history.

Sturm Graz emerged with greater attacking intent after the interval and came close to finding an equaliser in the 62nd minute.

Jürgen Heil unleashed a powerful effort that struck the post, leaving Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic beaten. However, Petrovic recovered quickly to block Jacob Hodl’s rebound and preserve his side’s advantage.

That proved to be the visitors’ best opportunity to change the outcome.

Bournemouth tightened their grip on the contest with 14 minutes remaining after a costly mistake from Khudyakov. The goalkeeper failed to gather a corner cleanly, allowing Rayan to collect the loose ball, turn sharply and fire home to make it 2-0.

The goal effectively ended Sturm Graz’s hopes of rescuing a result, leaving the home supporters free to savour the occasion.

Rodríguez completed the scoring in stoppage time, converting a penalty awarded after Jon Gorenc Stankovic was penalised for handball.

The final whistle confirmed a memorable 3-0 victory, giving Bournemouth their first European home win and another positive result under Rose.

For the Cherries, the occasion represented more than a successful night in continental competition. It was a celebration of survival, progress and the extraordinary journey from financial uncertainty and League Two struggles to European football.

With two victories from their opening two Europa League matches, Bournemouth have made an encouraging start to their campaign. Their historic night at the Vitality Stadium also offered a reminder that the club’s European adventure is no longer a dream but a reality their supporters can celebrate.
