Chelsea’s Welbeck embraces leadership role among young stars

Danny Welbeck is embracing his role as an experienced voice in Chelsea’s dressing room, insisting that helping younger players navigate the demands of professional football comes naturally to him.

The forward believes his years in the game have given him valuable lessons to share, and he is happy to offer guidance to teammates who turn to him for advice.

With Chelsea’s squad featuring a significant number of younger players, Welbeck recognises the importance of experience and leadership behind the scenes. Rather than treating it as an additional responsibility, however, he sees supporting his teammates as part of who he is.

The former England international has experienced the highs and lows of football throughout his career, leaving him with a perspective that can benefit players still finding their feet at the highest level.

Welbeck explained that his age and experience naturally place him in a position to help others, particularly when younger teammates have questions about their careers or the challenges they face.

“Well, I have to embrace it. Like with my age, especially within the dressing room that I’m in now, there are a lot of younger players there.

“I’ve been through a lot of experiences, good and the bad, you know, and it’s only natural for me to pass on, um, a lot of the advice.

“It’s just natural, bro. I just like to help people.

“I’m embracing the role, and it’s not something where I have to think, ‘Oh, I’ve got to do this,’ or ‘I’ve got to do that,’ for the younger players, a lot of stuff that they come to me with questions about and that sort of stuff.”

Welbeck’s comments underline the value of experienced players in a dressing room where emerging talents are still developing their confidence, decision-making and understanding of the professional game.

For younger footballers, advice from teammates who have experienced different clubs, managers, competitions and difficult periods can offer a valuable perspective beyond what they receive during training sessions.

Leadership does not always require a formal title or a carefully planned approach. Sometimes, it comes through everyday conversations, honest advice and a willingness to help teammates learn from mistakes.

That appears to be the approach Welbeck has adopted, allowing younger players to approach him naturally rather than making his experience a barrier between them.

His willingness to embrace that responsibility also highlights how experienced professionals can influence a team’s culture away from the spotlight. While performances on the pitch remain the ultimate measure, the relationships built inside the dressing room can play an important role in developing a united squad.

For Chelsea, having senior figures willing to share their knowledge could prove valuable as younger players continue to adapt to the expectations that come with representing a major club.

Welbeck’s message is simple: experience means more when it is shared. By making himself available to teammates and offering guidance when needed, he is embracing a leadership role without forcing it — allowing his actions and years in football to speak for themselves.
