Jaissle takes responsibility as Newcastle United struggles against Everton

Matthias Jaissle has admitted Newcastle United must raise their performance levels after a frustrating 1-0 Premier League defeat to Everton left the Magpies searching for answers.

Newcastle struggled to impose themselves at St James’ Park on Monday, failing to create enough meaningful attacking opportunities as Everton claimed all three points through Thierno Barry’s second-half strike.

The defeat was another setback for the Magpies, who had already suffered a 3-1 loss to the same opponents in the Carabao Cup just four days earlier. Losing twice to Everton in such a short period has increased the pressure on Newcastle to find a response.

Their evening became even more difficult in stoppage time when Jacob Ramsey received two yellow cards in quick succession and was sent off, leaving the hosts to finish the contest with 10 men.

Newcastle’s lack of attacking threat and failure to execute their pressing strategy were major concerns for Jaissle, who did not attempt to shift responsibility away from himself after the final whistle.

The manager acknowledged that his players fell short of the standards expected, both when they had possession and when they were trying to win the ball back.

Asked what Newcastle needed to do to turn things around, Jaissle insisted a detailed assessment of the performance was necessary before deciding on the next steps.

“We need to analyse that now in detail.

“It’s also clear that I have the responsibility and I also take that as the manager of this club, and we need to do things better.

“There were many things there, not only in possession, which was not on the level we expected to see.

“Also out of possession, we wanted to press them high, we wanted to stretch them as soon as possible and make also a clear distinction if that was overplayed from their position that we defend in a compact block, but nothing between.

“Again, it was not much seen today on the pitch.”

Jaissle’s comments underline the scale of the work facing Newcastle after another performance that failed to deliver the expected intensity or attacking quality.

His reference to the team’s pressing structure was particularly telling. Newcastle had intended to disrupt Everton high up the pitch, force them into difficult situations and fall back into a compact defensive shape whenever that press was bypassed.

However, the manager felt those instructions were not properly reflected on the pitch.

The defeat leaves Newcastle 13th in the Premier League table, with the club needing a stronger response to prevent their difficult run from becoming a bigger problem.

For Jaissle, the immediate priority is clear: identify what went wrong, restore confidence and ensure Newcastle translate their tactical plans into performances capable of producing results.
