Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka is confident in the Gunners’ abilities and believes the team can handle the pressure that comes with winning trophies.
Arsenal have not a major trophy in four years, their last being a 2-1 win over Chelsea in the 2020 FA cup final in Mikel Arteta’s first year in charge and as the Spanish coach approaches five years in charge of the club, the 23-year old forward believes the right time has come.
“We’re not scared. The last two seasons we’ve competed for the league and come very close”, Saka said.
“We’re also back in the Champions League, we have some experience there now, so we feel we’re ready to compete for every trophy. We really want to take that next step and try to win something.”
Arsenal have not won the league since the famous Invincibles in the 2003/04 season and have fallen short twice in recent years as they have been pipped to the title by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
“It’s horrible, I’ll be honest. It’s just that extra fuel for me and extra motivation. I want to get it over the line this season and try to lift the trophy, for sure”, he continued.
They recently returned to Europe’s elite club competition for the 2023/24 season which was a first in seven years and the England international believes the team is poised for glory soon.
“You work the whole season and you’re so close, you’ve literally got one hand on the trophy, you’re in the final or you’re right there to win the Premier League, or whatever trophy you’re competing for that season, and then you don’t win it. It’s like the whole year’s work and nothing to show for it”, he added.
The Gunners sit third in the English Premier League, six points adrift of League leaders Liverpool and are in pole position to qualify for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League.
They also recently defeated Crystal Palace to qualify for the semifinals of the EFL cup and could finally end their major trophy drought at the end of the campaign.
