Former Barcelona defender Nelson Semedo has expressed complete confidence in Wolverhampton Wanderers and their ability to successfully navigate the Premier League relegation waters as they prepare to face rivals Aston Villa on Saturday.
Semedo is currently captain of a Wolves side that have now suffered four consecutive Premier League losses following that 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Molineux last weekend, despite initially collecting seven points from their first three matches under Victor Pereira.
Earlier this season, they endured a five-game losing streak under Gary O’Neil. The only team to have survived relegation after suffering separate five-match losing runs under different managers in the same season was West Ham in 2006/2007 (under Alan Pardew and Alan Curbishley).
Wolves have been relegated in both previous instances where they started a calendar year with four consecutive defeats (in 1906 and 1982), and with tough fixtures against Aston Villa, Liverpool, and Bournemouth ahead, relegation concerns are mounting.
However, Semedo has expressed complete belief that Wolves have got what it takes to turn their fortunes around.
“My belief in this group is 200%. I know everybody’s working super hard to get out of this situation,” Semedo told the club’s website.
“I know the staff is working really hard as well, and they have helped us a lot since the day they arrived. I believe 100% in this team.
“I know we have a great team with great players. We have been playing against very good teams, it’s true, but I’m sure that we’re going to work hard and we’re going to do better.”
Semedo made 124 appearances across three seasons at Barcelona between 2017 to 2020. The 31-year-old Portuguese enjoyed some success during his time in Spain, helping Barcelona to 2 La Liga titles, 1 Copa del Rey and 1 Spanish Super Cup.
