Naomi Girma Could Return for Chelsea’s Subway Clash Against Man City

Chelsea are hoping to have United States international Naomi Girma available for their Subway Cup final against Manchester City on March 15.

Girma appeared to suffer a left calf injury in her first Chelsea appearance last Sunday following her world-record $1.1million (£890,000) move from San Diego Wave in January. The 24-year-old started Chelsea’s 2-2 Women’s Super League (WSL) draw against Brighton & Hove Albion but was taken off after 59 minutes due to injury.

The injury will have her miss out on Chelsea’s FA Cup quarter final win match against Crystal Palace on Sunday but club manager, Sonia Bompastor is hoping to have her in the team for the team’s next encounter against Manchester City in the Subway Cup final on Saturday, “Naomi and Keira won’t be available for the game on Sunday, but we have a chance to have them next Saturday for the cup final,” Bompastor confirmed, via Chelsea’s website.

Girma joined Chelsea from the Wave with a minor calf injury, which had kept her out of Emma Hayes’ USWNT camp in January and delayed her debut for the English club.

Chelsea are top of the WSL, eight points ahead of Manchester United having played a game more than their rivals. Next Saturday’s Subway Cup final marks the first of four fixtures in a row against Manchester City, with the WSL game at the Etihad Stadium sandwiched between their Champions League quarter-final legs.
