Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe did not hold back in his assessment of the club’s current squad, insisting that some of the players on Ruben Amorim’s roster are ‘overpaid’ and ‘not good enough’.
United currently sit 14th in the Premier League, trailing fourth-placed Chelsea by 15 points in a disappointing season that has seen the team continue to struggle despite Amorim taking over from Erik ten Hag in November.
The Red Devils have made significant investments in recent years, yet high-profile signings like Antony (£81.5m) and Jadon Sancho (£73m) are out on loan after failing to impress at Old Trafford.
Casemiro joined from Real Madrid for £70m in 2022, followed by Rasmus Hojlund (£72m) and Andre Onana (£47.2m) a year later. However, all five players have faced criticism during their time at the club with Ratcliffe also calling them out in a recent interview with BBC Sport.
“If you look at the players that we didn’t buy; we’re buying Antony, we’re buying Casemiro, we’re buying Onana, we’re buying Hojlund, we’re buying Sancho,” he said.
“These are all things from the past, whether we like it or not, we’ve inherited those things and have to sort that out. It takes time for us to move away from the past into a new place in the future.
“Some are not good enough and some are probably overpaid, but for us to mould the squad that we are fully responsible for, and accountable for, will take time. We’ve got this period of transformation where we move from the past to the future.”
