Osimhen eclipses Odegbami’s Nigeria record, closes in on Yekini

Nigerian star, Victor Oshimen has etched his name in the history books following his double strike against Rwanda which saw him leapfrog Nigerian legend Segun Odegbami to become the Super Eagle’s all-time second top goal scorer.

Oshimen, 26 marked his first appearance in the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with a brace, firing Nigeria’s to their first victory of the tournament with a 2-0 win over Rwanda in the Amahoro Stadium on Friday.

The match signalled a promising start to the Eric Chelle’s era, with the Super Eagles having showcased a renewed sense of purpose after a shaky opening to their World Cup qualifying campaign.

Having secured 3 draws and one defeat in their first four encounters in Group C, Nigeria were in a desperate need for a win and Galas star proved to be the difference maker in the highly anticipated encounter.

The 26-year-old forward wasted no time as he orchestrated a defining win in the matchup. In the first half, he delivered a glancing header as he rose highest to meet Ademola Lookman’s expertly delivered free kick, nodding the ball past the Rwandan goalkeeper to break the deadlock.

His second goal came late in the first half after latching a precise through ball from Samuel Chukwueze into the back of the net. Oshimen’s latest strike not only sealed Nigeria’s victory against Rwanda but also etched the forward’s name into football history.

He has now surpassed Nigerian legend Odegbami’s long-standing tally of 23 national goals moving into second place of Nigeria’s all-time scoring charts.Only Rashidi Yekini, the iconic striker who led Nigeria to World Cup glory in 1994, has scored more with a total of 37 goals.

Oshimen made his senior international debut in June 2017 and has since established himself as a crucial member of the team scoring 29 goals in 35 appearances. The on-loan Napoli forward has also been in scintillating form for Turkish side with a whopping 28 goal contributions across 29 games helping his side remain at the top of the league table.

The forward shall return to league action on March 29 when Galatasaray face Besiktas. Prior to that , the Super Eagles will continue their qualification campaign when they face Zimbabwe on Tuesday.
