Matheus Cunha: Why I snubbed  Arsenal and Manchester United

Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Matheus Cunha has revealed that his desire to help the club in their battle to avoid relegation was key in his decision to remain at the Molineux despite concrete interest in his services from Manchester United and Arsenal in the January transfer window.

Cunha was one of the most sought-after transfer targets in the winter window with traditional Premier League giants Arsenal and Manchester United taking particular interest. With both sides in desperate need of striking reinforcements at the time, his fine form and prolific performances for Wolves made him a more than ideal candidate.

With Wolves in 19th position and facing the possibility of relegation from England’s first division, the 25-year-old could have easily succumbed to the allure of signing for such iconic clubs. But to the surprise of many, he stayed put and even went on to sign a contract extension.

Cunha has now opened up on the reason behind his decision, revealing in an interview with the Guardian, that his special relationship with the Molineux faithful made it difficult to abandon them in their time of struggle.

“I had a lot of offers but I wouldn’t feel well if I had done it,” Cunha said.

“Some things you can’t control but I couldn’t leave the club in the middle of the season, in a difficult situation, in the relegation zone.

“Sometimes all we want in life is affection. People think we have everything, but we’re human beings, too. We need a bit of understanding – we have our difficulties.

“Wolves gave me that joy back. The fans [have given] me a lot. The status I have today, the player I am now and the happiness I’m feeling, it’s because of them. I’m really grateful to Wolves.”
