Marc-Vivien Foe Prize: Hakimi wins Ligue 1’s Best African player

Paris Saint Germain defender Achraf Hakimi has been awarded the illustrious Marc-Vivien Foe Prize, which honors the best African player in Ligue 1.

The remarkable honor PSG star has received is a result of his exceptional play all season long, both in their domestic league and the UEFA Champions League.

How brilliant was Hakimi this season?

For the French powerhouses, Hakimi has regularly demonstrated his outstanding defensive ability. In the French league, his remarkable speed, defensive ability, and offensive contributions have mark him apart.

The Morocco international showed variation throughout the season and was an amazing asset for Luis Enrique’s side since he played vital part in both offense and defense.

What story lies behind the award?

Radio France International (RFI) and France 24 give the Marc-Vivien Foe Prize, an annual award, to the finest African player in Ligue 1.

Named after the late Cameroonian football player Marc-Vivien Foe, who at 28 slumped and died on a pitch in France in 2003, the award honors the legacy of one of Africa’s football greats and celebrates African excellence in French football.

How did the Moroccan merit this?

Having found the back of the net on four different accounts and registered six assists so far this season in the France top-tier level, the club’s vice captain, who joined Enrique’s team in 2021, has become one of the best right backs in the world.

This awareness allows Hakimi to rank among other exceptional African players who have received the Marc-Vivien Foe Prize.

He became the fourth Moroccan to have won this prestigious award, after Marijuana Chamakh(2009), Younes Belhanda(2012), and Sofiane Boufal(2016). He is the second defender too following Chancel Mbemba, the Congolese who won it two years back.

The 26-year-old will likely dazzle the world in the upcoming African Cup of Nations schedule to be hosted by Morocco in December.
